Not the week I expected

The week started out so nice. We were celebrating our youngest’s 33rd birthday. Yes, it’s hard to believe we have a 33 year old when we can’t possibly be more then 40 ourselves! I had gone to Goodwill and found some Crate and Barrel spaghetti bowls – 4/$12. What a score, when I got home I researched and saw they sell for about $12 each. I found an Italian themed platter that had a tiny chip so asked for a discount, they took 20% off so the platter was less then $4 and when I got home I used a black sharpie to fill in the chip and no one was any the wiser. What I really wanted was an old school chianti bottle to put a red pillar candle in but remembered Trader Joe’s had Olive Tree’s so got one for the center piece and then gifted it to him for his birthday. I found a Youtube channel with Italian Music to play during dinner – it was a lovely evening.

I prepared the meatballs the day before, following my favorite Rocco Di Spirito meatball recipe (no breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese and eggs as the binder). I put them in a muffin pan and covered with saran wrap to refrigerate overnight to let the flavors come together. Tomato sauce was on sale the week before for .79 a can (I know, what used to be the regular price!), I put that on to simmer with the sautéed garlic and onions, italian herbs/spices, bay leaves and fresh basil then added the meatballs after I baked them for about 25 minutes. I made a brown butter and sage sauce to go over store bought gnocci. The dinner was so good and there was enough to send home a meal for the next day and lunches for husbands coworkers. Oh, I threw together chicken parmesan too, pounded out boneless, skinless thighs and cut them in half before dredging in seasoned flour, egg and seasoned bread crumbs. It was a great evening.

The week took a little turn the next day. I had a crown put in Wednesday morning – that was going to be my big talking point all week! “I got a crown, he had to make adjustments, yadda yadda yadda”. While I was in the chair I got this quick pain in my lower back and had to pull the water sucker thing out of my mouth and tell him I had to stand up and readjust my position. As he finished I thought…. I think I have a kidney stone. Well, by the time I got home I was 98% sure I did indeed have a kidney stone. Good gyads – it certainly is how they describe! YOUCH. A brief summary of my trying to cure it: a heating pad, a massage pad, Aspercreme, walking, sitting, laying, rocking…. holy smokes! I wrote to husband at work and asked what a kidney stone feels like – which was exactly what I was feeling. I even called the doctors office and talked to the RN who said I should go to ER because they can do quick pain management if nothing else. Awwww, pshaw…. if that’s all they are doing I can handle it on my own. NOT. I asked husband to leave work, first time I’ve asked that in our 38+ years because this was crazy. Wouldn’t you know by the time he got here, about four hours after it started, it died down. A few hours later when it started back up, I suggested we do go to ER. I don’t know that it was the right thing to do, especially when I get the bill in a few weeks, but at least I got all the testing done in one loonnnnggg ‘appointment’ instead of taking days to go from one place to the other. That is a definite glass half full outlook!

The accommodations were lovely – I had an ‘outside’ room, not like a cruise ship balcony room but a bed in the hallway. After a CT scan confirming I wasn’t crazy, there is a rather large kidney stone, an iv filled with antibiotic and pain meds, we went home nearly five hours later. It seems like it was three days in one – I can’t believe this is only Friday of the same week! Today is much better while I wait for that little buggar to push it’s way through to the finish line. So much to look forward to!

I guess next week I will write about how fun it was to hang out with the grandson and watch him and grandpa work on this motorcycle together. Was this just 6 days ago??

  1. Geezuz Pammie! What a horrifying week you’ve had! I’m SO glad you are all taken care of. A previous husband had a kidney stone and could only crawl on his hands and knees. It was so painful. Don’t know if it’s different for men than women but – still effing painful!!
