Life’s journey is not to
arrive at the grave safely
in a well preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways,
totally worn out, shouting,
“.. holy shit …what a ride!”
This weekend I will turn 60 years old. While some will say life begins at 40 or 50 – gotta say I’m definitely not a member of the life begins at 60 club! For ME this birthday is a moment in time where I am looking back at the same time I’m looking forward.
Part of looking forward for me is the commitment to truly get rid of the junk. After some research we found College Hunks would not only donate items that were donatable, but also do a big dump run. While I am a big supporter of our local Facebook Buy Nothing Site, there were a lot of items that just needed to be tossed. I have to say once the truck and the ‘hunks’ arrived I may have done a lot of pointing and saying ‘and this…and that…this too…..’. A friend asked what I was going to put in the cleared out areas – I said it was full of peace of mind!
I’m so glad we took the opportunities to travel when we did and while I may be a bit wary of another international trip – if only because there are a lot of days with longer moments of ‘what was I looking for’ or ‘where am I going’ – there are places I still want to see. The Dr. Seuss book, Oh The Places You’ll Go, seems appropriate again. So many are gifted this book at high school or college graduation but I think it applies again at this stage of my life. “I’m afraid that sometimes you’ll play lonely games too. Games you can’t win ’cause you will play against you.” I’m hoping heart wins over head and I can continue to strive for “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose……You are the one who’ll decide where to go”.
So maybe I’m actually looking to diving in instead of only looking back. Part of the getting rid of junk may be approaching the next stage with hope and spirit of adventure, I think I will embrace 60 and not feel like it’s time to start closing things down but to keep on a path of ‘holy shit…what a ride!’
