“We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living but not a life. We’ve added years to life, not life to years.” – George Carlin
This summer has been a challenge. By coincidence the two families I was a nanny for both moved out of the city in late spring. After 20 plus years working either at a public school or self employed as a childcare provider and nanny, this has given me the opportunity for a glimpse at retirement until fall arrives.
Finding balance for this “Summer of Pamela” has been a challenge because I know it’s temporary. Some days I hit it running and tackle the list of things to do with the deadline in mind and rushing to cross them off the list. Other days I think this is my opportunity to slow down and enjoy the time. Thing is, I like the combination of sitting outside with my coffee in the morning and listening to the birds chirp (and watching a YouTube video or two) in combination of tackling household and yard chores that have gotten away from me. And it is fun to be here when he gets home from work and get a smooch when he walks in the door.
This fall when I go back to work part time, and as we continue our journey to fulltime RV living, I’m hoping to use the lessons I am relearning this summer to budget my time. Time, Time, Time….. it seems to be the crux and the joy of life, the challenge for me, is finding the balance.
