Getting ready to sail away

It was a beautiful holiday weekend in Seattle so we took advantage and went over to Smith Cove to see the Ovation of the Seas ship preparing to sail away for Alaska. She’s a big ship – kind of dwarfs the Celebrity ship. We could see the North Star ‘ride’ rise as it gives, as they say, a breathtaking 360-degree views as you gently ascend 300 feet above sea level. I will probably take their word for it!

We have our standard cruise supplies we take but an Alaska cruise needs a few extras. The waterproof bag – or as it’s officially known, the HydroStop Lightweight Dry bag – is essential for a rainy Alaska port day. If we don’t need it that’s great because it folds up very compactly but if it is raining, our phones, wallets, cameras or whatever else we don’t want to get wet can go in this bag and be protected. A pair of binoculars to see wildlife either from the ship as we cruise or on land if we go on a sight seeing excursion adds to the quality of the trip. My collapsible water bottle so I can enjoy my Crystal Lite drinks takes up no space. Having a power strip – without the surge protector, those will be confiscated – gives us more options to charge phones and other devices while on board. I especially like to have one place for our paperwork, this passport holder has a few zipper pockets to put cash in addition to room for our passports, luggage tags, and paper copies of our tickets. While I enjoy the availability of everything being on an app, I like a good old fashioned paper copy of everything in case things go south! Oh, and a sun hat that rolls up into a small funnel shape. I noticed this paragraph is like the old Highlights Magazine page where you had to find the hidden objects.

I’m looking forward to taking a lot of photos and have been taking a few online lessons on how to get better shots with your phone camera. The cruise is just a few shorts weeks away and I’m looking forward to visiting with family we don’t see as often as we should and having an opportunity to make new memories together.
